Water Softener Systems: Learn How They Work

By Daniela C.

Hard water can be very harmful and difficult to use. It can clog the pipes, reduce the lather producing quality of soap and can react with soap to create a sticky scum. It is not at all useful for household purposes.

Hence, water softening by installing water softener systems is very essential. Hard water contains magnesium and calcium. This leads to its unproductive ability. By using one of these systems, you can very easily get rid of these problems. They replace the magnesium and calcium ions in the hard water with sodium ions. The sodium ions reduce the chances of pipe blockage and reduction in the formation of soap lather. The following article will give you a detailed review about the working of water softener systems.

The basic functioning of these softeners is very simple. The water in the house runs through a pipe system imbibed with small plastic beads. The plastic beads are made up of zeolite which is nothing but sodium ions. As the water touches these beads the magnesium and calcium ions are replaced with sodium ions. The beads in the softener need to be changed in periodic intervals because the zeolite in the systems wears out eventually. As the zeolite wears out there is nothing but magnesium and calcium ions left on the plastic beads. This acts against the ability of water filtration systems and makes the water hard once again. This is when the chemical matrix or the zeolite from the systems needs to be regenerated.

Regeneration is a very simple process. As mentioned earlier the sodium ions from the plastic beads wear out, hence, the plastic beads have to be soaked in a stream or a solution of sodium ions. You must have noticed that water softener systems are usually loaded with salt. As we all know salt is a very good and strong example of sodium chloride and that is why we fill them with salt. As we pour the salt, the water treatment system mixes up a brine strong solution with the salt and flushes the solution through the beads and the zeolite. The brine solution flushed through the system once again replaces the magnesium and calcium ions with sodium ions. The remaining brine, calcium and magnesium ions are flushed through the drainage pipe of the softener. Please note that water softener systems can emit around 25 gallons i.e. 95 liters of salty water. This happens especially after regenerating the systems. People who happen to have lead pipes should make it a point to remove the lead pipes from their systems and replace them with ordinary pipes. Lead pipes in water softener systems may disturb the entire flow of water and result in the wearing out of lead.

Thus, we see that by installing water softener systems we can ensure a very safe and healthy atmosphere for ourselves.

What Is The Best Water Purification System For The Home?

Water Purification System

By Edward Joseph

With today’s concern about the pollution in our environment and our health, we cannot prevent ourselves to look for the best water purification system that we can use in our homes. Water is essential and because we cannot live without water, the best water purification system would be a very significant concept that can ensure us safe and healthy drinking, bathing and cleaning water all the time.

However, water purification products are available in many types which can be hard for us to choose the best ones for our family. Consequently, there are three basic setups with the water purification systems and these are the smallest filtered pitcher, the portable countertop filtering system that utilizes the reverse osmosis system and the under counter water filtering system. All of these are manufactured to provide us the advantages. But in order to choose which can be the best water purification system for the home, we must have comparison about their features and discover their plus and negative sides.

Here we present to you what you can gain from every type and their downsides as well.

The Pros and Cons of Water Purification System Type

  • Filtered Pitcher. This can be the best buy for you if you want an inexpensive water filtering system which you can use readily at home. It is the most portable type you can even put it inside your refrigerator and gives you the advantage of staying safe in drinking tap water whenever you go. You just plug it in an electrical outlet and in minutes you got yourself and your companion pure and clean water without the large sediments, harmful chlorine and microorganisms that thrives on unsafe water. About its downsides, you need to change its filters more often if you use it regularly and this can become quite costly on your part. Aside from that, it has small water containment and can only be good with few glasses though you can use it as often as you like. And with more than a thousand harmful chemicals on tap water, this type cannot filter out all of it.
  • Portable countertops reverse osmosis water filtration system. Most of these systems are the countertop while there are models that are under counter. Portability is one of the good features of these portable types but their best feature is with its reverse osmosis system. These are the best in filtering out harmful chemicals, sediments, rust, chlorine and everything that is in the water including minerals and salts. For individuals who are fastidious with cleanliness, this can be the best for them. But for those who want to drink very clean water but with the natural minerals in it, they might think twice before buying it. Why? Because the reverse osmosis filtration system can also remove necessary minerals such as magnesium, salt and calcium from the water and these are essential elements that the body can use. Aside from that, they consume more energy than the pitcher type because these use powerful system to produce super clean water.
  • Multi-system water filtering system. Because these are the largest types among the water purification systems, these are installed under the counter or sometimes on large drawers. The good sides of these types are quite a few. These are more environment friendly than the reverse osmosis water purification system, have larger capacities and best for large families. Also, changing the filters require only about three or four times a year. These do not also eliminate water minerals but can remove toxins, chemicals and organisms found on tap water. However, because of their size, they also cost more than the pitcher and the portable reverse osmosis system. So basically, though this is the costliest it can be the ideal equipment to buy.

Now that you have an idea which can be the best water purification system for your home, you may check more of them on the web and know more of their specifications. There are always the latest models that you will definitely need for your home. To sum it up, the pitcher type will be the best choice if you live alone in an apartment or want to have a handy water purification system at hand. The portable reverse osmosis can provide you the cleanest water and though it can also filter out water minerals, you still can have the minerals from the food you eat. It can also be the best water purification equipment for every family. The multi-system can be seen as the best water purification system with its multi-stage filtration system. However, it can cost you much with its initial cost so you better have an allotted budget to have it.

The Submersible Pump – Advantages And Disadvantages Examined

By Quin Trimble

As implied by the name, a submersible pump is designed to be placed (submerged) in the water or other fluid that is to be removed. Submersible pumps are not all alike. There are different versions of these mechanical devices, used in various applications, including borehole, pool, pond, fountain, well, bilge, and sewage, to name a few.

If these pumps are so popular, then there must be some advantages to using them. What are these advantages?

One advantage to a submersible pump is in the way it is designed. It is designed as a tightly contained unit, with watertight gaskets and seals that keep the liquid out of the housing and internal components. This design ensures that the pump will not leak or short out electrically when submerged.

Besides being tightly sealed and waterproof, there are other advantages of submersible pumps over non-submersible models. One advantage is how it pumps the water. The submersible uses direct pressure to push the fluid through the pipe or hose, rather than using the suction method. Using direct pressure means that the pump can move fluids a greater distance more efficiently than suction devices.

Being self-primed is another advantage over a non-submersible. Other types of pumps, such as jet pumps or shallow well pumps, require being primed to start up. Priming is not required to start a submersible unit.

Also, due to it being placed directly within the liquid, the submersible model can operate more efficiently when moving liquids a long distance.

Is There Any Disadvantage To Using a Submersible Pump?

When considering the advantages of any type of product, one must also look at possible disadvantages. Of course, as with any kind of mechanical device, there is always the risk of some sort of problem occurring.

One potential problem would occur if a gasket were to rupture or lose its integrity. This would cause the pump to leak, eventually corroding the internal components and causing it to fail.

A problem or failure of the pump brings a second disadvantage to light. If the pump does need to be repaired or replaced, it may be more difficult to retrieve, by nature of it being submerged in water.

Another disadvantage is that it may cost more than a comparably sized non-submersible unit. While the price may be a consideration when deciding on a purchase, when weighing the advantages and disadvantages, the submersible pump often wins out.

In conclusion, when looking at the advantages and disadvantages, you will likely come to the conclusion as have many others, that the submersible pump is a convenient and versatile device – useful for many different purposes.
