We don't use the old sand filters anymore. Today, we use chlorine of lime to put an end to this type of epidemics. As far as efficacy is concerned, this method is quite good. Plus, it's also quite safe for both you and your kids. However, the amount of chlorine in water should be less than 2 PPM.

In the US military, calcium hypochlorite is put in a Lister bag as an effective means of disinfecting drinking water.

Today, boiling water is still the common method to purify water. Home users are still following this practice in order to kill microorganisms found in water. All you need to do is wrap a used piece of rag around the water hose, and it will help you achieve the purpose.
